OK, all you healthy eaters, it is time to plant. If you want affordable organic food just plant it yourself. Young plants and seeds are very affordable, and you control what is put on it or in the soil. Just one plant can produce enough for you to eat for the season. If you want to store up by canning, freezing or dehydrating, you need to plant more. You can use raised beds, flower pots, or dig up the whole yard. I know that gardening is hard work, but it comes with such amazing rewards! In the next few weeks I will share the details of my garden. So far I am a bit late on some of my seeding, because wedding plans are keeping me busy. I have 2 tomato plants, 2 basil plants, several peppers, and red cabbage. The Greek oregano. mint, and lavender are all well on their way. I have 2nd year blackberries that are full of leaves. I just planted them last year. We have free range chickens with a movable coop, so I have bug eaters, and fertilizer.
Remember that when you purchase plants and seeds, make sure you get non-hybrid, open pollinated, organic seeds. You will be able to collect seeds from your produce and have seeds for next year and then some. So your initial investment may be a bit more, but ultimately it is a better payoff. I know you can do it, so give it a try!
